Article from the Archives: ‘Titanic: “She Sailed Only Half Full”?’

Many people seem to assume that the number of passengers Titanic carried on her maiden voyage was relatively low.  It is not uncommon for people to express surprise when they learn that she was not fully booked.  In fact, there is no reason to assume she should have been.  My article ‘Titanic: ‘She Sailed Only Half Full?‘, published in the Titanic Historical Society’s Titanic Commutator 2019: Volume 43 Number 224, offered some data around passenger traffic. It is important to understand the context that large express liners in 1912 rarely sailed fully booked outside the peak of the season.
